Michael Umberger is an Asheville, North Carolina native and UNC Chapel Hill Alumnus.  He graduated from Charlotte School of Law with honors and subsequently began working for a real estate law firm. 

Michael’s practice areas include immigration law, business law, trademark law, copyright law, estate planning and elder law, family law, real property, and landlord-tenant law.  He practices both transactional law and litigation so whether you need someone to draft a legal document or enforce your rights in court, he’s equipped to handle your case.

His knowledge of business law includes issues regarding business formation, tax considerations when choosing entity structure, drafting bylaws and operating agreements, buy-sells, contracts, and assists nonprofits with obtaining tax-exempt status.  He has experience with both registering trademarks and defending them.  He represents both landlords and tenants in court and can draft a lease agreement to suit the needs of either. 

Michael has been practicing immigration law for the past year and has already helped many people acquire green cards and citizenship.  Whether your relative is already in the United States or is still outside the country, Michael is equipped to walk you through the immigration process from beginning to end.  Michael has also had a lot of success helping people obtain immigration benefits whose petitions had previously been denied.

Although Michael’s focus has been civil law, he’s adept at handling traffic tickets as well.  Michael can help reduce or even dismiss your ticket so that your insurance premiums don’t increase.  In one instance, he was able to restore a client’s driving privileges after his client was pulled over for driving 96mph in a 65mph zone. 

Michael has served as pro bono general counsel for the nonprofit PPRE-Forevergreen of Charlotte, Inc. since his time in law school and has assisted many small to mid-sized businesses with their legal issues, including local startups Dream on 3 and Go-go Fresco.
